Mom’s buttermilk pancakes

August 21, 2018 eating well family matters in the kitchen

I never order pancakes when I go out for breakfast, because when I do I am inevitably disappointed. I can honestly say I’ve never eaten any that can hold a candle to my mom’s simple recipe for buttermilk pancakes. They are the best, hands down: fluffy, chewy, and utterly delicious!

And if you cook them in bacon fat, as Mom often did, that elevates them to the sublime. Am I biased? Absolutely! But try them and see if you don’t agree. (I’ve posted the recipe in my Cooking section.)

I hadn’t made — or eaten — these pancakes in years, so when my sisters and I organized a brunch with some old family friends recently, I suggested we make some (“we” in this case meaning my sister Shannon, who was hosting). So she did. And they completely lived up to my memory and expectations: how often can one say that of anything?

Here’s to those rare occasions when reality lives up to our nostalgia —
and to Mom, who taught us to love to cook!

I will have to prepare them…..I do sometimes prepare carrot cake which I really like, and it was at your house that I had it for the first time….Lovely pictures!

Thanks, Peggy! I hadn’t eaten them in years, and they were so good. Let me know how yours turn out!
